DALSA Announces Partnership with Rad-icon Imaging Corporation for Large Area Digital Radiography CMOS Sensors
Waterloo, Ontario, November 28, 2000--DALSA Corporation (TSE:DSA), today announced from the RSNA Convention, Chicago, Illinois, its partnership with Rad-icon Imaging Corporation. The two companies will jointly develop, manufacture, market and support digital radiography components and sub-systems for the medical marketplace employing Rad-icon’s revolutionary large area CMOS image sensor technology.
This partnership is an important milestone in the fulfillment of DALSA’s strategy of extending its prominence in medical radiography, as part of the growth plan for DALSA’s Life Sciences Strategic Business Unit.
Savvas Chamberlain, DALSA’s CEO commented, "Rad-icon’s breakthroughs in development of large area CMOS image sensor technology will reduce the cost of digital radiography to the point where it can finally be broadly accepted in place of film in traditional radiographic applications and deployment venues." Rad-icon’s CMOS imager technology is currently producing enviable results with detectors of 50 mm by 50 mm in size, which is suitable for stereotactic breast biopsy, spot mammography, and certain bone densitometry equipment. This CMOS imager technology is more cost effective than previous digital imaging approaches.
Moreover, this technology is fully scalable to detector sizes up to 18 cm by 24 cm, meaning that it is extensible to a much broader range of applications, including computed tomography, screening mammography and cardiology. This technology lets DALSA provide medical imaging OEMs the digital detector areas and performance of amorphous silicon (a-Si) and amorphous selenium (a-Se) panels, but with drastically reduced prices, superior yield, and greatly improved security of supply.
Dr. Chamberlain continued, "DALSA’s current generation of OEM imaging modules and sub-systems for radiography are fast-becoming the industry standards for breast biopsy and spot mammography, with significant penetration in additional medical applications. Our collaboration with Rad-icon provides the technology to meet our customers’ future needs in traditional medical radiography, as well as an expanding range of new applications. I am proud of DALSA’s history as the digital imaging company that major OEMs worldwide turn to for solutions to their most challenging imaging requirements. Our partnership with Rad-icon continues to deliver on our vision of providing the highest performance, cost-effective digital imaging solutions for demanding, valuable applications."
Gene Weckler, President and founder of Rad-icon Imaging Corporation, commented, "This partnership will accelerate Rad-icon’s ability to respond to market forces, by providing Rad-icon both financial strength and brand equity that DALSA has established over the years. Rad-icon will also benefit from having access to DALSA’s vast capabilities in sales, marketing and manufacturing. Rad-icon will have access to DALSA’s highly skilled sales and support network, their OEM relationships with medical imaging companies, as well as their ISO9001 approved design and manufacturing capabilities. DALSA’s recognized leadership in the design of imagers and cameras will broaden Rad-icon’s engineering capabilities. This partnership will result in better understanding of market needs, and an improved ability to define new products resulting in a shorter time to market than would otherwise be possible. This will lead to superior health care and improved quality of life. We are delighted to be working with a company as highly respected in the high performance digital imaging industry, as DALSA."
Frost and Sullivan’s 1999 "World X-Ray and Computed Tomography Equipment Markets" study, projects the digital screening mammography market in 2004 to be US$320M. Company estimates place the digital imaging sub-system portion of this market at that time at US$80M annually. In addition to these full-field opportunities in mammography, company estimates for spot and biopsy mammography digital imaging sub-systems are US$25M annually at that time. Thus, the market opportunity in mammography alone for the products from DALSA and Rad-icon’s collaboration are expected to be over US$100M annually by 2004.
About Rad-icon Imaging Corporation
Rad-icon Imaging Corp. specializes in the design, manufacturing and marketing of solid state imaging detectors for the medical, industrial and scientific instrumentation markets. Rad-icon's focus has been to exploit the advantages of CMOS technology to develop cost effective X-ray Specific Imagers. CMOS technology offers a highly integrated solution to radiation imaging applications (i.e. x-ray and gamma ray imaging). CMOS imagers not only outperform the alternative technologies but do so at a lower cost. Rad-icon offers more than 50 years' combined experience in the development of solid state imaging detectors and their application to solving customers' specific problems. The company was founded in 1997, with the mission to explore new opportunities in digital radiography through the use of state-of-the-art CMOS technology. Since then, Rad-icon has developed and introduced its line of RadEye large-area high-resolution X-ray Specific Imagers, and the complementary line of Shad-o-Box industrial x-ray cameras based on the RadEye imagers. Rad-icon Imaging Corp. is a private company located in Santa Clara, California.
